I have had a diary or journal since I was a girl. It has always been an escape. Sometimes a daring one as more eyes than mine have found their way to the pages with my deepest thoughts.
Over time, I began to start writing down all that I was thankful for after seeing for myself the impact of gratitude. I decided to write down 5 things a day. Not too many that I wouldn’t stick to it, but not to few either.
As you move through the month, here are a few key points to remember when keeping your gratitude journal.
To get in the habit of writing everyday it is best to be consistent and write at the same time every day. I find the best time to be at night just before I turn out the light, and the day is still fresh on my mind. You will find that once you start this practice, you start to take note of what you are thankful for during the day. When it hits you, you can either make a note in your phone, carry a small notebook or grab a napkin. Then transfer them at the end of the day.
The Right Notebook
Tomorrow I will be sharing with you a journal for the month that you may download with artwork by my talented friend, Jill Carstens, but when the month is over you’ll need a book to continue the practice. Find one you enjoy.
We are all thankful for our families, friends and health. Without going into depth about exactly what it is you are thankful for, the gratitude becomes watered-down and the effects are lack luster. Be specific with your gratitude. I am not just thankful for my grandma, I’m thankful that in her own way, she dares me to be great. She always has.
Bad days have good too!
Yes, even amongst our worst moments there are shiny bits we can list. Fight the urge to skip a day or write something negative. Dig deep. There is always something there even if it’s the fresh taste of your minty toothpaste in the morning.
Gratitude finds us when we are living in the moment and not allowing our brain to take over with excessive chatter. There will be a challenge this month that will help you practice presence.
Don't forget to come back tomorrow to download your 30 days of gratitude journal!
