As most of you know, this is my favorite time of year. Since starting the gratitude movement, Thanksgiving has taken on a whole new meaning. However, this year feels different. First of all, the Christmas campaign from retailers has started earlier than ever. I feel like each year Thanksgiving becomes more about a carb loading event for the Christmas shopping. It’s disheartening, which is why my work is more important than ever.
There is something bigger that feels different though. Just the other day, cc and I were talking about the gratitude program, and I told her I was disappointed. The beginning of the month started out with a bang. Photos were posted on Facebook and instagram. Words of gratitude were expressed on multiple platforms, and several people signed up for the new gratitude program. And then…the election happened and there were crickets. The number of gratitude posts drastically dropped. Feedback from my class stopped. I've started singing the chorus lyrics to the Paula Cole song, Where Have all The Cowboys Gone? just thinking about it.
Where have you gone? What is the difference in pre and post election? Is this really about the election? I really have no other explanation for it.
I choose not to get political. You most likely won’t ever know what side of the fence I’m on unless you know me personally, because I choose to be a light when all this ugliness is thrown around. But this is too big of a deal not to say something. We cannot allow the momentum to slow or change will not happen.
Whatever side of the aisle you are on, and whether you are celebrating or grieving, NOW is the time to stay connected. Now is the time to stop listening to the media and social media, and stay connected. You have the choice. We cannot control what is going to happen or not happen to our country. It is not our business.
What is your business?
Take away the fear, the anger and hatred, and let our collective unconscious be about love and gratitude. Gratitude for what is. For what you choose to have in your life. Gratitude for the ability to choose with your dollars. With your voice. Now is not the time to feel hopeless.
Be the light. Be grateful. Practice it. These are the moments it will serve you best. When you feel raw and ugly. Stay connected and dig deep.
Where have all the cowboy’s gone? I do hope you will rally and be the example so many of us need to see.
