This might strike you as funny or strange that I would add a liver cleanse to the Year of the 40 list. A cleanse isn’t fun by any means, but for me it has been a game changer. Almost two years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease; a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. What I thought were postpartum hormones working themselves out after having P, turned out to be something a little more serious. Here is a list of things I was experiencing:
Fatigue and sluggishness
Increased sensitivity to cold
Pale, dry skin
A puffy face
Brittle and flakey nails
Hair loss - globs of it in the shower
Unexplained weight gain
Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
Joint pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders
Depression and irritability
Memory lapses and major brain fog
Nothing on this list was fun, especially with a new, not-so-happy baby in tow. Thanks to cc for putting up with me!
Once it had a name, I no longer wanted it. I stopped trying to tell myself it was just postpartum and I would go “back to normal” soon enough. I was already taking a natural thyroid replacement for my hypothyroidism, but I didn’t want to add anything else to the mix. I prefer to heal my body in natural ways. It keeps me clean so that I can still vibrate at a high energetic level. Pumping my body full of synthetic medications dulls my intuition.
My naturopath suggested I do a liver cleanse and then clean up my diet: No dairy, no sugar, no grains (which includes gluten). The diet made sense because these foods are high inflammatory foods which exacerbates the physical conditions of Hashimoto’s. The liver cleanse was an interesting suggestion, but I was open to it. Our liver is like a sponge; it filters out toxins, environmental poisons, and other stuff our bodies can’t process. But after a while, the sponge gets full. A liver cleanse does as its name implies; cleanses the liver of all the toxins it’s been filtering. I figured it couldn't hurt, so I changed my diet and did an intense liver cleanse. After thirty days I felt like a new person and within a few months I had reversed the Hashimoto’s! I felt 100% better. Even better than I felt before getting pregnant.
Today, I keep my diet as clean as possible. I’m not as strict as I used to be, but I know when to tighten the belt, so to speak. After the first major cleanse, I felt so clear and physically relieved that I vowed to cleanse twice a year moving forward. Note: A true cleanse shouldn’t be done more than twice a year. It is a lot of work for the body.
For my first cleanse for the year of the 40 I tried a new company, offered through a friend of mine, called Prime My Body. They are CBD oil based. I chose this line because of how clean they are chemically. Meaning, there are no unnecessary fillers in their products. If you are doing a liver cleanse, why put added chemicals in your body that you are just trying to get rid of!
All the symptoms were fairly minor, for me at least. There was minimal discomfort in the way of headaches, minor fatigue and some brain fog. In a standard cleanse, the body clears the toxins out of the liver and so they are pushed through the mainstream of the body which causes all the side effects. Then a toxin “catcher” grabs them and eliminates them through your waste. My cleanse was ten days long which is standard. I eat as clean as possible and add in a few fasting days to give my body the rest it needs to cleanse.
I feel “back to normal” again. Maybe I’m making this up, but I do feel my liver becomes abnormally clogged. All I know, is when I start to feel the list of symptoms creep back in, it’s typically time for a diet clean up and cleanse. Our bodies are pretty amazing when you give them the power to do what they are intended to do. I want to feel good this year. I don’t want to feel 40, and that requires some effort, and a little self-love in the form of a liver cleanse.
